Uberman – Twilve Five
Writer’s Drought
Not much happened really. I was more tired than the previous four nights and I overslept a little, don’t know for how much. I tried one of these text based games, Photopia it was called. It was actually pretty interesting, it made me want to program one myself. Also I noticed something, my last adaptation started the 18th of December and this did too (only March of course). This night I was more tired than the previous four, I really don’t have much else to write about, I don’t know if I will continue to write one entry every twilve.
Uberman – Twilve Four
Two Oversleeps are Better Than One
This Twilve I overslept two times! One for exactly three minutes and the other for 13 minutes. So compared to the three previous twilves, this one went great. The reason for the oversleep must be because I forgot to crank up the volume on the laptop for trypoly’s alarm. I have my cellphone within reach of my napping spot, so I (or my brain, rather) turns it off without waking up, and the third backup alarm is very inaccurate, so I set it with good margin after my wakeup time.
Entertainment
I started to play Max Payne this twilve, and can’t wait to play more. It’s a great game even though its from 2001 with crappy graphics. The mystery of Laura Palmer’s murder continues to unfold in Twin Peaks, I watched it for probably five hours. My ass got to pay for that… stupid chair. I am looking forward to the spring and summer when I will bring more time outside in the night, its pretty weird being the only one in the entire town, even though it’s pretty light outside.
Uberman – Twilve Three
Third Strike
Guess what, I overslept for a few hours tonight too. It’s weird, it wasn’t so bad during my last adaptation, not in the beginning at least.
I’ve noticed something else weird. During the weeks when everything got screwed up right up until Twilve Two, I had very little motivation during the nights. “No, I don’t want to watch a movie” and then go back to snooze, which often turned into oversleeps. Somewhere around Twilve Two I didn’t feel that way anymore and I haven’t since. It’s probably because I’ve gotten farther into Twin Peaks and they often end with cliffhangers.
Commandments
So now I’m going to introduce a couple of rules which I (again) used during my last adaptation:
-Never lie down (obviously)
-After I wake up I will go outside for at least two minutes in the cold and think. I have to acknowledge that if I lay down I will oversleep.
-I will also try to write in the Nightly Almanac every night and follow what I’ve written, especially when I’m prone to enter Zombie mode.
-Something which I can’t seem to recall.
Anyway, I’m not starting to get sleepy yet, probably because I’ve overslept at least an hour every twilve. I fall asleep for almost every nap, except for some during the day.
Uberman – Twilve Two
Warmth
This night went fine until i woke from my 0400 nap. I was cold and decided to go lay down at the heated tile floor in the hall. I used to do this every so often when I was semi-adapted a couple’ months ago. What I did was to put an alarm in another room to ring in 30 minutes or so. Then I would lay down on the warm tiles and have a great time, just laying there doing nothing except staying awake and getting warm. I also had my phone-alarm on snooze every seven minutes so I wouldn’t fall asleep. If I did fall asleep, my brain would not press the snooze but rather turn it off; that treacherous bastard. But then the alarm in the other room wouldn’t be far away, so I’d never oversleep for long. So then I ended up oversleeping again for an hour or so. What I’ve learned from this is to wear warm clothes instead of relying on the floor to get warm. I’ve also brought an oven to keep my room warm. Now I have one less reason to lay down, which is my main problem.

The Meaning of Twilve
First of all, I’ll explain what “twilve” means: It is one of the rare cases where it doesn’t exist a word for a certain concept in English, but it does in Norwegian. It is usually the opposite. The concept in this case is a period of 24 hours, or simply one day. This is called “et døgn” in Norwegian. But “a day” in not a good word because it can also mean the twelve hours that aren’t night. “24 hours” is not good either because how are you supposed to say for example: “Yesterday’s 24 hours, I washed the refrigerator for two hours, but during the 24 hours that starts in 16 hours I’m gonna go to Bangladesh (for ten hours),” it just sounds wrong. So I found a language-blog where one clever guy combined the words twice and twelve (two times twelve hours) to make the word twilve. This is a perfect word for us Ubermen and -aspirants! Join us in our quest to make this an official English word!
The Evil of Sleep
Since I had slept through the entire two previous nights I didn’t fall asleep for any of my day naps, which was boring because I’ve started to sleep on the floor again; after ten minutes the right side of my pelvis started to hurt and the remaining twelve minutes was not pleasant. So I put a pillow under my hip on the next nap. It worked wonders. I slept on all my nightly naps though. Maybe a little too much. Actually two hours too much. What a great start!
All in all I wasn’t really tired this first twilve, except for right after my nightly naps. I don’t remember how I overslept, but I forgot to set a backup alarm. From now on I will have three; trypoly’s alarm, my phone and an analogue clock, and I hope it won’t happen again.
The Nightly Almanac
This twilve I wrote a schedule for everything I should do through the night, something I call the Nightly Almanac. Init I write everything I’m going to do during the night, down to exactly what minutes I will do it. First of all it takes time to write, which is great during adaptation because you need stuff to do all the time. Secondly you know exactly what to do when you enter Zombie mode and can’t/shouldn’t decide for yourself.
PS! I wrote this yesterday, the 18th of March, not 19th as it says. The same with “Why I Nap and ”
Introduction and First Attempt” Just to be clear, thats all.
Why I Nap
Here are some of the reasons I am becoming an Uberman, certainly not all of them because there are so many benefits it would take some time archiving them.
1. Time for stuff (a.k.a. the Obvious One)
Watching TV-series, parkour, programming, gaming, reading, making and editing movies, cleaning, homework etc; these past years I haven’t had homework, and its been great! But next year we do get a lot of it, so I suspect I won’t be able to do them without the extra time.
2. Sleep trouble
“They” say that people should get 6-8 hours of sleep each night. I always slept 8-10, but I was still a little tired all the time. I also had problems getting up for school in the mornings; it was always an extremely unpleasant experience, but that problem vanished when I started Uberman, even during adaptation.
3. Different
I don’t want to live a boring “A4 life” (get up, go to work, go home, eat, sleep and repeat) and I feel sorry for those guys, so this is a way to avoid that. It also makes me feel like an Uberman; its hard to explain, but you should understand it if you are “one of us.” Its kind of like being in an exclusive club or knowing something that most people don’t. I guess the Freemasons feel sort of the same way.
Introduction and First Attempt
Hi, I am a 17 year old male from south-western Norway and this blog is about my second Uberman adaptation. Here’s a little information from my first one:
First adaptation
I started 18th of December, the day before the Christmas vacation. I had about two weeks to get ready before the school began. That worked fine, by then I weren’t tired at all during the day. During the night though… From about day 5 or so, I had several oversleeps and was very tired, especially from 0400 to 0600, so I added a core during that time. It helped a lot, but after a week or two, I removed it. Previously I’d changed the schedule (small tweaks, except the adding of the core and a pavlinanap) several times, but this is the final revision which I use to this day:
1200 – 1610 – 2000 – 0000 – 0400 – 0600* – 0800 – 1150
*This is the pavlinanap that I’ve kept until now, I will probably remove it when I get adapted.
After I removed the core, I got less and less tired despite a few oversleeps. By day 35-40 I was as adapted as I’ve ever been. I still overslept occasionally and still had the extra nap at 0600, so I don’t know if I was a real Uberman.
Failing
But about two weeks ago I started failing. I was sick for a few days and slept more than I should have, after that I was quite out of it and forgot a couple of naps and had to delay some etc. All in all a pretty turbulent week. Since then I have overslept a lot. Yesterday and the day before that I actually slept the entire night. But through all of this I’ve kept almost all my naps and tonight I’m going to start over again. I’ve not told my parents exactly how bad it is, but before they know, I’ll be an Uberman again! I’m gonna do it cold turkey, except for the extra nap at 0600 which I’ll keep. I will try to write one blog post each night about how it goes.
